The Beginning of Everything -- The Big Bang

  • Published: 03 March 2014
  • How did everything get started?

Has the universe a beginning or was it here since forever? Well, evidence suggests that there was indeed a starting point to this universe we are part of right now. But how can this be? How can something come from nothing? And what about time? We don't have all the answers yet so let's talk about what we know.

Also, we try to make this one not depressing. Tell us if we succeeded.

BY THE WAY. We have a website now. We'll try to blog from time to time, show you guys how we make the videos and give more insight to our process. Also we sell stuff. We really don't know where this whole kurzgesagt stuff leads us. But we are really thankful for all the attention and positive feedback and yeah, maybe we can make this our jobs -- it would be pretty nice and we could do more content each month. But we'll see. For now, thank you very much everybody for making this little adventure possible.

Next Video: April. (as soon as we can but we kind of have to make a living and visit college) Topic: Nuclear Energy (probably, if we finish the research in time -- if not something else)

Short videos, explaining things. For example Evolution, the Universe, Time, the Stock Exchange or controversial topics like Fracking. Because we love science.

As a Belgian, I am shocked.
Not only don't you know that Einstein himself refuted the idea of an expending universe at first,
0:22 you even wrongfully give credit to Hubble, even though it was Georges Lemaître, a Belgian priest who actually dicovered this.,.
I mean, discovering and providing evidence to support a claim, isn't the same.,.

Fnaf Farts Animations I don't believe the Big Bang theory is Biblical. For example, the Bible says that the Earth was created before the stars. However, the Big Bang theory says that the stars were created before the Earth.
I also don't believe the Big Bang is scientific. If the Big Bang theory is true, then all the matter in the universe should have been mostly evenly distributed. However, the matter in our universe is very "lumpy". There are huge spaces in the universe where there is literally nothing, and other spaces with billions of stars and planets packed together.

@Tyler B Yeah I never believed in that crap but maybe if it was real it must have been made by god. I'm a Christian so that option might be possible for it, else there is nothing to prove it.

And the Universe is STILL expanding faster than the speed of light.
Things moving in space are limited to moving at the speed of light or less.
In the case of an expanding Universe, space itself is expanding - which apparently doesn't contradict the Theory of Relativity.

So you could say that the entire universe was inside the singularity of a super massive black hole that held everything inside it and decayed? I mean that after 'a lot' of time everything was gathered into black holes that united into the biggest and only one in the universe and then blew up after decaying releasing everything in the universe at once creating a new one.And the cycle goes on. So multiverses?

Many cosmologists don't actually believe the singularity part at the very beginning but rather the moments following where our equations *don't* break down.

                    Hilmar Zonneveld  23 hours back

Yeah; the singularity is generally accepted to indicate a breakdown of General Relativity (under certain extreme conditions).

I would rather forget about this "Mathusalem star", which I don't consider particularly significant.
In any case, the Big Bang is only the beginning of the Universe as we know it; it seems likely that the Universe existed in SOME form BEFORE the Big Bang. We simply don't know all the details yet, because our current knowledge of physics breaks down under certain extreme conditions.

2:35 considering that the universe expanded to a billion kilometers in a second, that means that the universe "travelled" half billion km/s which is equal to 500.000.000km/s. Light speed is 3*10^8m/s=300.000km/s, so the universe moved faster than the speed of light. Right?

@Hilmar Zonneveld hmm. So in a way, it is wrong to say that light speed is the highest speed in the universe. It is still though, the highest speed of anything but the universe itself.

                      • Hilmar Zonneveld
                        Hilmar Zonneveld  23 hours back

Yes, that is correct. And it is STILL expanding faster than the speed of light - meaning that objects that are very far away move away from us very quickly.
Think of this as a speed limit for objects moving WITHIN SPACE - but in this case, space itself is expanding.

No, steady state is an alternative to the Big Bang, one which ALSO involves an expanding Universe. This idea has been disproved in the meantime, by observational evidence.

What was before that singularity? What happens at the end? Then what?

the singularity was everything but nothing?

_What was before that singularity?_ - Nobody really knows. In fact, the idea of a "singularity" is very dubious - the very fact that General Relativity predicts such a singularity probably means there is something wrong with the theory. Mind you, it has worked great so far, but it is expected to break down under extreme conditions.

This is a theory that Albert Einstein didn't believe all. This video doesn't cover a LOT of details. We've been told in schools that this IS how the universe was created (in school systems that are said to not teach religion....religion=beliefs. And, now people believe in Big Bang Theory).....When watching this video, did you question if you believe in this, or did you watch it with the mindset "This is True!"??...Levels of certainty in this theory are what I find to be most concerning.

The Big Bang Theory is the leading explanation about how the universe developed. It's based on many observation and sciences, one of the more important observations is the phenomenon of the expansion of spacetime - that the universe is expanding and did so in the past. Those are facts. The expansion from a smaller more dense state is what we call the Big Bang.
