  • Published: 03 November 2019
  • World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is confirmed to be the next expansion. At Blizzcon 2019 they gave us a little insight on what's to come. A sexy new cinematic, the zones, covenants....some good stuff worth talking about. In this video I talk about what we know so far, give a little bit of background information and of course later on we'll dive deeper into the story. For now... I hope you'll enjoy ^_^

Hiyo! Update info from the Q&A they did: The jailer is not an entity we're familiar with in the past. It's something new which is super exciting! The contact between it and Sylvanas is related to her dive from the top of icecrown... so not exactly what I had in mind at 2:37 ... still...worth!

@Dynamura My best guess is that the helmet's power and connection to the shadow lands grew over the years. I would try to explain it metaphorically, but I'm not sure if it makes sense, and I am also in no way an expert in warcraft lore, so remember it's just a guess at best.
Imagine the helmet initially as a small door (a small connection/link) into the shadowlands. Over the years the door got expanded upon until it eventually became a massive gate or even like a countries border.
A single carpenter could fairly quickly build the small door (equivalent to the dreadlords could create the helm at first), but building up the door into that massive gate would take continuous effort over a long time (equivalent to the lich king growing in power).
And if you ended up just breaking a small door, the resulting entrance would be a small hole. But breaking a huge gate would leave a gaping whole and a big entrance like we see in WoW.

Tl;dr: there's a difference between the initial helmet and the destroyed helmet, so it's not unrealistic to have initially crafted it, and destroying the more powerful helmet could have much greater consequences.

      Just my best guess

"He doesn't see the contradiction in all this"
Yes, you did say that. Her actions and motivations are contradictory in his recount according to you.

Take a look at everything else you wrote after that. It's just another explanation of your line of thinking, your SPECULATION. There's nothing "whatever the fuck you say" about that - it's still just speculation on your part, and NOT fact like you claim. That's what I've been pointing out as nonsensical, and I've been very clear about that.

I don't care one bit about your speculation (I might even think it's cool as far as you know since I haven't even commented on it), I care about you flaunting your narrow-minded perspective like it's a textbook of life. Speaking of textbook: if you're going to keep writing long comments about what you THINK is going to happen (no need, though), please use proper line separation so it's easier to read.

@Riley Rivalle It is not about his contradictory interpretation, I never said that... I said her actions and her words don't match and are contradictory, which Nobbel didn't even comment on, nor does he analyze her words in any way and it is actually pretty obvious, where this is going:
She sees the world as a prison.
She wants to 'set us all free', saying it to Bolvar. Either she wants all souls to move on or she is just talking about the undead. She feels trapped in this world, unable to move on. Other Undead may see this differently, because they cling to life and don't even want to move on.
I refuse to believe that she does this just because she is evil. Maybe misguided or tricked by some 'evil whispers'. Her goal is to undo her Undeath without ending up in the Maw like everyone else. What she saw, when she died at ICC, wasn't hell, it was the Maw. So Sylvanas is now working towards growing something that she is afraid of? Seems contradictory to me. So whatever the fuck you say, my comments were everything but nonsensical. It is rather a pretty sharp analysis of her actions, words and other factors that are part of the warcraft universe.
I also never heard him comment upon the resemblance between Sylvanas' words and those of Yogg'saron, which are soooooooo obvious by now. He was the first to say the words "No king rules forever, only death is eternal", he calls himself the god of death.
Some may be speculation, but it was clear from the start, that her goal is to die. She doesn't want to live eternally, she doesn't want to master death, she just fucking wants to move on.

Yeah, sure... And I'M being "toxic", lol. Your entire (pseudo-)argument here is that someone is wrong because they might not think what you think, and you apparently can't differentiate between speculation and fact. Your SPECULATION does NOT make his recount of her actions and motivation contradictory. Do you follow? There's no "You will see" about this; until it's fact, it's not fact. Your reasoning (like I surmised) is nonsensical, and there's why.

Imagine Sylvanas now turning into a 4th-Wall-Breaking character, speaking about how the ceiling of the world always bothered her when she flew out of Undercity, straight up, and banged her head against the invisible wall, and now that it's broken, she enjoys her freedom. And how everyone in WoW is controlled by a puppeteer and how she is free now and everything...

4:38 Ice Crown is saturated in the blood of Yogg-Saron, the "God of Death" aka "Fiend of a Thousand Faces" aka "Beast of a Thousand *Maws*" aka "Hope's End" (Hmm... Lots of quotes from Sylvanas about ending hope this expansion... I wonder why?). He was able to create a pathway to the Emerald Dream, so if the Shadowlands is the dark cousin to the Emerald Dream, it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for him to converge with it. The Frozen Throne was revealed to be a gateway into the Shadowlands. What are the Frozen Throne and ICC forged from? Saronite. I wouldn't be surprised if we found Yogg-Saron causing chaos in the Shadowlands.

Okay but, as much potential as there is in Shadowlands there are already a few glaring lore plot holes its made. Hopefully the explanations we get in the expansion will at least patch over most of them. But my biggest question is this. Where do the things we kill in the Shadowlands go?

Wow had gone over the edge -- we're now champions of the planet who kill titans, Gods, and now presumably the overseer of death itself ??? This is why Classic is doing so well, I think the simplicity of being some traveler that needs to collect 8 zevrah hooves is a little more relatable than being the champion of the universe ...

Perhaps that's why they are bring back, or at least bringing back the possibility, of reintroducing characters from the "Warcraft" universe - HOPEFULLY taking the game in an unforeseen direction under the leadership of a 'dead' hero ??

I must say I am kind of confused by the Jailer character and the speech in the Shadowlands overview video.
"Jailer of the damned. A grim task which I have failed. Within the realm of shadows lies the darkest of terrors which should never be set free"
I mean what is the darkest of terrors? Is he talking about himself like some narcissist? Or perhaps there is something else which he does not want to be released. Also the shadowy figure seems to be chained down...why would a Jailer be chained down?
I know that Blizzard said that its the Jailer in the trailer...but maaaybe, just maybe they meant only the voice? Or perhaps they did intentionally said that to get us of the trail.
Maybe I am just looking too much into it but I dont know, there seem to be some inconsistencies.

There are 2 things that are generally red flags for me in franchises: time-travel and afterlife-travel. There are various reasons for each, but overall, they share this: they potentially make a lot of otherwise tense and touching moments become cheap and boring.

Once we get time travel we can just retcon anything, go back in time and change it. Including character deaths. The same potential issue comes from opening up travel to the after life. If someone dies, what does it matter? We can just go to the after life and see them or better yet, save them and bring them back. Death suddenly doesn't mean what it used to.
I've been using the word "potentially" a few times, because a lot of franchises think of decent ways to handle these issues. Like time travel being about multiverses, so you can't really change anything, and after life travel has a heavy toll to counter balance it, making death still be an issue. But on the other hand, there are franchises like Dragon Ball, where death is quickly fixed by Shenron.
I'm not saying WoW isn't going to handle these issues well, I'm just being cautious and concerned. It seems like a lot of old characters will be returning after all.
I'm mostly worried about what they might do with Varian. His self sacrifice was such a great scene (I'm probably biased). And if they just allow him to reappear and be a badass again, that scene will lose it's impact. I think it's fine if they want to use him to further develop Anduin. Like giving him closure, or test his faith or something, but other than that, I think Varian should stay dead and gone.
Still a lot of potential for great stuff, just also a lot of potential to mess things up

We don't know if anyone from before then has been sent there, but the Burning of Teldrassil and the attack on Darkshore and Ashenvale we know those souls went to the Maw. So yeah, Saurfang is 100% there, and many many others. Now whether we actually see them is another story.
